War crimes in Sri Lanka, Parliamentary Debate – record of proceedings by McDonagh MP

Dear all, As you know, I was lucky enough to secure a debate on War Crimes in Sri Lanka earlier today. The proceedings are now on the internet at:

http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm/cmtoday/cmwhall/07.htm#d2e1041

I argued in favour of the International Crisis Group’s recommendations of an independent international investigation of war crimes committed by the Sri Lankan Government. Such crimes include intentionally shelling civilians, hospitals and humanitarian operations, shooting civilians, and deliberately inflicting suffering on civilians.

As you can see from the Minister’s reply, the Government of this country appears to hope that Pres Rajapaksa’s commission looking at the war will do a good job, but I am very sceptical of that. However, it is great news that following all the work we did over the past year or so, we have won the argument about GSP+ and the Commonwealth Conference. Last year, the Conservatives were reluctant to support these, but we have convinced them to change their view.

Anyway, I hope this is of interst, and if you have any comments or feedback please do send them to me.

My very best wishes,

Siobhain McDonagh MP
